Holiday Cottages in Walberswick
If you’re looking for a quintessentially English break, then taking a holiday cottage in Walberswick will be exactly what you’re looking for. Walberswick has long been a popular tourist destination and is an excellent location for a day trip or longer.
Walberswick has its own village green around which sits tea rooms, restaurants, two pubs, the Anchor and The Bell, and a small village store for essentials like bread, eggs and milk. Just over the river lies Southwold, another Suffolk favourite. There’s no access by car to Southwold which lies just across the River Blyth. Instead there are two choices, the most popular with the kids being to take the rowing boat ferry (peak season only) or the Bailey Bridge footbridge. For a small charge you can hop on the traditional ferry which runs between Walberswick and Southwold and can hold up to 12 people. Perfect for those wanting to explore and avoid trailing around by car.
There’s more than enough to do in Walberswick to keep you occupied. Walberswick National Nature Reserve is one of three sites managed by Natural England on the Suffolk Coast. Lace up your hiking boots, grab your bins, and take a stroll along the permissive paths spotting the many birds and amphibians that call the reserve home along the way. Follow the coast south from Walberswick and you’ll find Dunwich. If you’re visiting in Autumn you’ll see herds of deer on Dunwich Heath waggling their antlers and emitting belches and bellows during deer rutting season! Stop at Dunwich Beach for a drink and some fish and chips from the cafe which is open from Spring until the end of November.
Should the rain put outdoor excursions on hold, head over to the independent Electric Picture Palace in Southwold. This quirky and unique cinema can hold up to 70 patrons. Holidaymakers are welcome and may buy ‘seasonal membership’ for £3 (at the time of writing) plus the cost of the film ticket. Very reasonable prices for such pretty surroundings!
Whether you choose to stay in a Walberswick holiday cottage, or in Southwold or the surrounding area, you’ll leave Suffolk feeling refreshed and determined to return.
