Holiday Cottages in Argyll and Bute
Argyll & Bute is in the West Highlands of Scotland and stretches from the tip of the Kintyre peninsula almost to Glen Coe, and then east to Loch Lomond. After Loch Ness, Lomond is the second most famous of Scotland’s lochs so if beautiful scenery is a ‘must’ – a holiday cottage in Argyll & Bute will do nicely.
Oban is the most popular town in Argyll & Bute. Though not large, it is always busy in the summer with its beautiful bay, interesting harbour and plentiful coastal and hill walks nearby. If you can tear yourself away from your comfortable holiday rental take a boat from Oban to one of the many beautiful Islands of Mull, Iona, Coll, Tiree, Islay, Jura, Gigha and Colonsay. Next, head south east from Oban down to picturesque Inverary on the shores of Loch Fyne. There’s a Castle, a Maritime Museum and a Jail! You can sit on trial, explore the cells and press one of the many costumed characters to tell you the meaning of ‘picking oakum’ in this interesting living museum.
Many people looking for an Argyll & Bute cottage want to take full advantage of the magnificent walks that the area affords. The village of Arrochar is a starting point for walks in the Argyll Forest Park. For those serious hillwalkers, tackle The Cobbler for which you’ll need equipment and a full day to complete the challenge (the return trip alone can take 5-6 hours). For an easier amble, walk to the Arrochar Caves in under an hour from the village (you’ll need to take a torch for this one!).
There are too many culinary delights in the region to list here, but before we close, a special mention to the many local whiskies and cheeses available in the area, especially Gigha cheese and Springbank whisky. Stock up, sip and then savour once you’re snuggled up back at your Argyll & Bute self catering cottage.
